Kayu balsa pertama kali tersedia di Amerika Serikat pada akhir tahun 1920. Sejak itu menjadi bahan baku dalam membangun pesawat model. Pada tahun 1928 pendistribusian kayu balsa mulai memasuki Indonesia. Tidak berbeda dengan di negara lain, di Indonesia pun penggunaan kayu balsa digunakan untuk pembuatan pesawat model dan replika jembatan.
